Morte encefálica: problema ou dilema para a bioética?

Abstract

This thesis aims at analyzing the thematic of brain death in a bioethical perspective. This choice is justified due to the fact that this thematic is enclosed in the research line "Clinical Bioethics" of this Master's Program, which reflects its social relevance for the reality experienced almost daily in hospitals with the dramas of many family members and friends of patients diagnosed with brain death. In this view, its aim is: to describe the various concepts of death, whether it be considering the medical criteria or the ethical-philosophical criteria; to differentiate the concept of cerebral death from the concept of brain death; to analyze the different positions of the medicine on the issue of brain death, with special emphasis on cases, even the most discussed in the media, of persistent vegetative state; to analyze the historical and philosophical origin of the formulation of the concept of human person and its correspondence in the bioethical referential of human dignity with its specific application to the patient in the state of death; and to point to the necessary attitudes of prudence toward the issue addressed. The prudence referential will help to answer the title question. The methodology applied is accomplished through literature and documental research, particularly in statements of international nature on this specific thematic.
